Constitution Hill Museum
Constitution Hill is a living museum that tells the story of South Africa’s journey to democracy. Once a prison and military fort, it now houses the country’s Constitutional Court, which upholds the rights of all citizens. Few places in South Africa hold as much collective memory: Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and Fatima Meer all served time here. Over its 100-year history, the site imprisoned tens of thousands of people—men, women, and even children of all races and political beliefs. In this way, the history of every South African is reflected within its walls.
